Currents — Design in Berlin with Laura Ewert & Jasmin Jouhar

Berlin has a strong, diverse, and sophisticated design scene, but it lacks visibility within the city. Laura Ewert and Jasmin Jouhar want to change that — because unless perceptions within local structures shift, Berlin design cannot be established as a brand on the international stage.

Laura has worked in media and the creative scene since moving to Berlin in 2004. She has witnessed how the city's club scene evolved from an underground movement into a unique selling point for its marketing, and how initiatives from the art scene grew into summer events that now attract an international audience. Through her work for outlets such as Die Zeit, Monopol, Der Spiegel, der freitag, and Deutschland Radio, she got to know more and more designers — and began to wonder why they weren't being supported more. She realized they needed a sustainable platform to champion their interests, simplify access to end customers, and facilitate networking.

Jasmin has worked with and within the Berlin design and interior world for nearly 19 years, as a design editor, freelance writer, and moderator. What began as a rather small, locally oriented scene grew into something much bigger and more interconnected — attracting young designers from Germany and abroad who come to build their business, work, teach, and become part of a like-minded network, as well as brands who choose Berlin as their home. From the beginning, Jasmin felt part of this growing scene and accompanied its development through writing, moderating, teaching, and consulting. Founding Currents felt like a natural next step. She moved to Berlin in 2000 and writes about design, interior, and architecture for outlets including Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Schöner Wohnen, Baunetz ID, and Design Perspectives.

Currents — Design in Berlin is a new community-based event to highlight Berlin's design scene. It premieres September 10–12, 2026, in different locations all over town. Players from the various design and interior fields will take part and turn the city into a three-day-and-night showcase. Currents is the long-awaited opportunity to explore Berlin's dynamic design and interior scene — from established brands and upcoming studios to design schools and off-locations, from exhibitions and activations to workshops and interventions. In the evening, the Currents Bar invites visitors to meet new faces and favourites.

Currents is initiated and organized by the freelance journalists Laura Ewert and Jasmin Jouhar and funded through participation fees. Its aim is to offer new perspectives on Berlin and sharpen its identity as a design city at a crucial moment, when its future as a fertile ground is at stake. Currents wouldn't be possible without the support and energy of Berlin's design community.
